Royals Defeat Wasps in Final Game of King Round Robin

BRISTOL, TENN.- The Queens University of Charlotte softball team (10-10) split a pair of games on the final day of the King Round Robin this afternoon, falling to King University (8-5), 4-3, before defeating Emory & Henry (10-4) 3-2.

Game One: King 4 | Queens 3

In the first outing of the day, Queens struck first as Kayla Smith recorded an RBI single to left field that brought Kaylee DeJesus home in the top of the first. King would answer in the bottom when Carly Turner doubled to center field to record an RBI and even the score. Camryn Haag then notched a two-run homer to put the Tornado on top 3-1.

King would score its final run of the game in the bottom of the third to extend their lead to 4-1 before Queens got going in the fifth. The Royals would fight back scoring two runs to cut the deficit to one, 4-3, but the Tornado defense made key stops in the final two innings to hold out for a narrow victory.

Smith went 3-of-4 at the plate, while DeJesus recorded two hits. Smith also recorded two RBI while Haley Nelson tallied one.

Kate Hunter and Nelson split time in the pitching circle. Hunter allowed four hits and four runs to record her second loss of the season.

Game Two: Queens 3 | Emory & Henry 2

Queens found themselves down one early in game two following a home run by the Wasps in the bottom of the second. They answered back with a DeJesus RBI double down the left-field line in the top of the third tying the game at 1-1. Kasidi Staley scored the game-tying run.

Another home run for the Wasps in the fifth inning from Kendall Varn would put Emory & Henry on top again, where they remained until the Royals took over the game in the seventh.

Ashlyn Mickler would record an RBI single to bring Jordan Hunt across the plate and tie the game at 2-2. Then Haley Hmiel doubled to center field allowing Mickler to score the go-ahead run.

Nelson and Khristen McPherson (2-2) both pitched in game two. McPherson saw action in five innings, striking out five while allowing three hits and two runs.

The Royals will be on the road again for their next doubleheader, opening  South Atlantic Conference play at Catawba College on Tuesday, March 1. Games are set to begin at 2 and 4 p.m.
