Royals Split on Final Day of Queens Round Robin

CHARLOTTE, N.C.- The Queens University of Charlotte softball team (5-5) split the day earning an 8-0 win over the University of Charleston Golden Eagles (0-4) before falling to the Lees-McRae Bobcats (3-5), 6-2, on the final day of the Queens Round Robin.

Game One: Queens 8 University of Charleston 0

In game one of the day for the Royals, Queens would get on the board first scoring two runs in the bottom of the second. Kayla Smith would record the first RBI of the game on a double before reaching third on a throw. Jordyn Thompson scored the run after singling to get on base. Ashlyn Mickler would also record an RBI on the next play with a bunt that allowed Smith to cross the plate and give the Royals a 2-0 lead.

Leading 3-0 after adding another run to the board in the bottom of the fourth, Queens would close the game out in the bottom of the fifth scoring five runs on seven hits. Kaylee DeJesus, Hayley Nelson, Thompson, and Mickler each recorded RBIs to help the Royals collect the win.

Mickler and Thompson finished the game with two RBIs each to lead Queens.

Kate Hunter collected her third win of the season in the pitching circle.

Game Two: Lees-McRae 6 Queens 2

The Bobcats used a two-run homer in the top of the second to quickly jump out in front of the Royals in game two. They then scored three more runs in the top of the third to take a 5-0 lead that the Royals could not overcome.

The Royals' Gerlea Patton was able to score a run in the bottom of the third on a sac fly from DeJesus. However, the Royals weren't able to ride the momentum of the run as the next two batters were retired.

Megan Powell's second home run of the day would give the Bobcats their sixth and final run of the game in the fifth. Coincidentally, the Royals' final run of the game would come in the fifth as well, mirroring the play they scored on in the third and giving the game its final score of 6-2.

Pitchers Kristen McPherson and Jordan Dunn would both see action as Dunn took the loss after pitching six innings. Lees-McRae's Powell would claim victory after pitching seven innings and striking out nine batters.

Queens will be back in action on Saturday, Feb. 19 traveling to Augusta, Ga., to take on Augusta University in a doubleheader scheduled to start at 1 p.m.
