Women's Rugby Remains Undefeated after Win at Navy

ANNAPOLIS, MD. - The Queens University of Charlotte women's rugby team took down the United States Naval Academy by a final score of 19-12 on Saturday afternoon. The victory marked the Royals seventh straight win as they complete the regular season undefeated.

"Navy has consistently been one of our strongest opponents throughout Queens history, and they definitely proved that today," said Head Coach Dana Meschisi. "It's unfortunate that we weren't able to play a JV match, but as the season comes to an end, we made the decision to rest our injured folks before heading into semis. The team needed a close-call game, and Navy gave us a hard fought match. The last 20 minutes of the game tested our depth, grit, and will to overcome adversity."

Queens used a strong start to lead them to victory as the Royals scored 17 points before Navy responded with 12 unanswered. Queens opened the scoring at the 4-minute mark as Angelica Rodriguez earned a successful try before Alle English converted successfully for a 7-0 lead. At the 11-minute mark, Jess Gozlan extended the lead to 12-0 with a try. Maggie Sweeney would continue the scoring opening the score to 17-0 with a try. Alle English would convert successfully for the second time on the day.

Navy would respond with 12 unanswered points, but the Royals early lead was enough to hold. Navy earned a pair of tries and a conversion to close the deficit to 19-12.

"Finishing our regular season undefeated shows that this team is hungry for competition and ready to make the transition to D1 next fall. As we head into postseason competition, our team will focus on the basics of rest and recovery. We're looking physically conditioned so now we'll focus on mental conditioning. There's always more to improve upon, and we'll work those mental and visual reps in our upcoming sessions on and off the field."

Queens will now prepare for the NIRA Championships which will begin on Saturday, Nov. 12. Fans can stay tuned for more information on the Royals postseason journey by following them on social media.
