Royals Open Season Upsetting No. 2 Mississippi College

COLUMBUS, Ga.- The Queens University of Charlotte women's soccer team opened their season with a statement win defeating No. 2 Mississippi College, 1-0, in the Columbus State Invitational. This is Queens' first win over a top-five ranked opponent in school history for the women's program. Queens moved to 1-0 for the season, while the Lady Choctaws open their year at 0-1.
 
Following a scoreless opening half, the Royals' first and only goal of the night came in the 47th minute from junior forward Nia Gaither. The first goal for Gaither of the 2021 season would be the 15th of her career. Senior Karen Juarez was awarded the assist.
 
Queens and the Lady Choctaws broke even with shots, 15 apiece. Junior goalkeeper Erica Turner collected the clean sheet after registering six saves, five of which came in the second half.  
 
Next up, Queens will play Embry-Riddle University on Sunday, September 5 at 1:00 p.m. The Eagles are in favor of winning the SSC Title this year.
