Game Recap: Women's Volleyball |

Royals Handle Coker 3-0 On Saturday Afternoon

HARTSVILLE, S.C. – In their eighth consecutive road match, the Queens University of Charlotte women's volleyball team picked up a pivotal conference victory at Coker on Saturday afternoon. The 3-0 win was the sixth sweep on the young season and improved the Royals to 7-5 overall and 3-1 in South Atlantic Conference action while the Cobras fell to 1-10 overall and 0-6 in league play.

The opening set was a tightly contested frame as both squads went back-and-forth in a set that saw eight ties and three lead changes. The Royals managed to finish the first set hitting .222 as a team which was led by Jesse George (Virginia Beach, Va.) tallying four kills. The Royals defense forced the Cobras into hitting .025 percent while committing 9 attacking errors. The miscues allowed Queens to propel ahead late in the first set and gain an early 1-0 lead in the match.

Queens carried over the momentum into the second set by using an early 8-1 run which was capped off by a Loren Johnson (Huntersville, N.C.) service ace to force the Cobras into a timeout. The early attack put pressure on the Cobras and the Royals took advantage. Queens managed to hit .273 in the second set and held Coker to a zero mark. The third set was similar to the first in that it was contested early. However, despite a lower attacking percentage from Queens, the Royals managed to close on a 10-3 run which was sealed by a Kaylin Dowling (Woodleaf, N.C.) kill.

On the afternoon, Queens hit .222 percent as a team while limiting Coker to a .034 clip. Jesse George led the Royals attack with nine kills and Jordyn Johnson (Jamestown, N.C.) added six. On the service line, the Royals picked up nine aces with Loren Johnson and Jordyn Johnson leading the charge with three each. On defense, Jordyn Johnson was remarkable again tallying a game-high 20 digs. The rookie was coming off a stellar performance at Wingate where she recorded 25 digs.

Head Coach Hannah Long was very pleased with her team's performance. "I'm proud of our team's ability to bounce back and play quality volleyball after a tough loss earlier this week," stated Long. "We got solid contributions from several players and executed well from the service line."

The Royals will return to the court on Wednesday when they travel to Catawba College for a South Atlantic Conference matchup. The match will begin at 7:00 p.m. from Goodman Gymnasium in Salisbury, N.C. Be sure to follow the Royals on Instagram and Twitter to stay up to date on all game updates and news.
