Hmiel Records a Pair of Home Runs in Doubleheader Loss to Catawba

CHARLOTTE, N.C. –  The Queens University of Charlotte softball team (6-22, 2-18 SAC) hosted the Catawba College Indians (26-10, 13-9 SAC) in a South Atlantic Conference doubleheader this afternoon, falling in both games.

Game one: Catawba 11 – Queens 2
The Indians got off to a strong start in the first game of the afternoon using a home run and three singles to score seven runs in the top of the first. The Indians would score another run in the second to go up 8-0 before a 2 RBI home run from Haley Hmiel gave the game an 8-2 score.

A double from Catawba's Jordan Dean in the top of the fifth then increased the Indians' lead to eight. Queens was unable to answer at the bottom of the inning bringing the game to a close in five.

Shannon McGuire recorded the loss after pitching all five innings. Brooke Walser of the Indians recorded the win.

Game two: Catawba 11 – Queens 1
Both teams got on the board early in game two as the Indians opened with two runs in the top of the first thanks to a double from Riley Tucker.  Queens' Hmiel responded in the bottom with her second home run of the day to bring the home team within one, 2-1.

However, Hmiel's run would be the only of the game for Queens as the Indians got hot in the second increasing their lead to five, 6-1.

Sabrina Martinez made a valiant effort in the bottom of the fourth to get her team another run singling on a bunt before stealing second and third. Unfortunately, she would come up short as the inning closed with Kayla Smith grounding out to the third baseman.

The Indians leading 7-1 at that point then went on to close the game in the top of the fifth as Sydney Goertzen recorded a 2 RBI single and Dean sent a ball over the fence.

Victoria Elder pitched the entire game for the Royals to take the loss while Catawba's Whitley Arnott would get the win after striking out three batters.

Queens will be back home Thursday, April 15 to for their final home game of the season against Mars Hill. The game is scheduled to start at 2 p.m.
