CHARLOTTE, N.C. – The Queens University of Charlotte baseball team earned a split in Sunday's South Atlantic Conference doubleheader with Newberry College, winning game one 10-4 before dropping game two by an 11-0 score at the Tuckaseegee Dream Fields.
Game One: Queens 10, Newberry 4 (Seven inn.)
The Wolves (9-5, 6-2 SAC) took advantage of a mental error early in the first game of the day to score two runs and build a 2-0 lead until
Nick Melton belted a solo home run in the third inning and had an RBI single in the fourth to even the score at 2-all.
In the fifth, Queens (4-12, 3-9 SAC) put up eight runs on just five hits as
Carter Foster started the scoring with a leadoff home run to left field.
Zach Weston singled down the right field line with the bases loaded to score two runs, while a
Dominic Ford double drove in two more for the Royals.
Drake Harris emptied the bases with a double to right center as the Navy and Vegas Gold built a 10-2 lead through five innings of play.
Newberry scored two runs with two out in the top of the seventh, but Queens' starter
Nick Charleson forced a fly out to right field with two runners on to end the game. Charleson (1-2) got his first win of the season after tossing a complete game, allowing four runs on four hits with four strikeouts.
At the plate, Weston was a perfect 3-for-3 with two RBI, while Melton finished 2-for-3 with a home run, two RBI and two runs scored. Ford and Harris each finished the game 2-for-4 and had two RBI and three RBI, respectively.
Game Two: Newberry 11, Queens 0 (Seven inn.)
Newberry flipped the script in the series finale, scoring six runs in the game's opening inning and eventually forcing the League's new mercy rule into effect leading by 10 or more runs after seven innings of play in a nine inning game.
The Wolves put up crooked numbers in the fourth and fifth innings as well to build the double-digit lead as Queens was only able to muster three singles in the contest.
Starter
Wes Boling (1-2) gave up nine runs (eight earned) on 10 hits in four innings of work, while reliever
Caleb Staley surrendered two runs on two hits in an inning out of the bullpen. Right-hander
Drew Meschede allowed just one hit and two total bases runners in two scoreless innings of relief.
The Royals will be back at The Tuck on Wednesday, March 10 for the second game of a home-and-home series with No. 3 University of Mount Olive at 1 p.m.
