Royals Close Regular Season with Senior Day Win over Newberry

CHARLOTTE, N.C.- Sophomore midfielder Gabe Lechner scored today's game-winner to lead the Royals past Newberry College in their final regular-season game of the year. With the 2-1 win, the Queens University of Charlotte field hockey team sits at 4-2 on the year heading into the conference tournament.

Senior midfielder Casey Carrigan scored her first goal of the season in just the second minute of play on an assist from fellow senior Korey Fine to put the home team in front 1-0 early.

Newberry would not find the back of the cage until the 32nd to equalize the match at 1-1 before Mille Eaton-Jones found Lechner for the go-ahead goal in the 50th.

Queens edged the Wolves 12-10 in shots though both teams would put seven shots on goal. Avian Thompson collected the win in goal after totaling a season-high six saves.

Prior to today's game, seniors Jill Sherman, Maya Forbes, Jocelyn Lawrence, Korey Fine, and Casey Carrigan were honored for their careers as Royals.

Queens will wait to find out who their opponent will be for the opening round of the South Atlantic Conference Carolinas Championship. The quarterfinal game will take place on Tuesday, March 30.
