WINGATE N.C. - The Queens University of Charlotte softball team (6-14, 2-11 SAC) faced Wingate University (10-10, 3-3 SAC) this afternoon, falling to the Bulldogs in both games of the doubleheader.
Game One: Wingate 8 – Queens 0
Leading 3-0 heading into the bottom of the sixth, the Bulldogs would get hot scoring five runs on four hits to pull out an 8-0 win.
After being walked and stealing second base, Sara Stroud was brought home thanks to a double from Haley Cashwell. Aubrey Reep then singled to left field to record two RBIs and increase Wingate's lead to 6-0. Two more runs then followed to close the game early.
The Bulldogs totaled 10 hits in the game.
Haley Nelson and
Adriana Wilson recorded the Royals' two hits.
Shannon McGuire and
Kate Hunter saw time in the pitching circle during the game. McGuire recorded the loss while Reep of Wingate pitched all six innings for the Bulldogs, striking out five batters en route to recording the win.
Game Two: Wingate 3 – Queens 0
The Bulldogs were able to get on the board early in game two when Cashwell was hit by a pitch. Much like the first game, she then stole second base before being brought home on a single from Heaven Maness.
In the bottom of the fourth, Sam Hogan recorded a base hit up the middle. Two batters later, Gracyn Polk singled through the left side to record an RBI and give the Bulldogs a 2-0 lead. Their third run of the game soon followed in the bottom of the fifth.
The Royals recorded five hits in game two compared to Wingate's eight. They also left six runners on base.
Victoria Elder recorded four strikeouts and the loss for Queens while Sydney Kale took the win for the Bulldogs.
Next, Queens will be back home in Charlotte to take on the Catawba College Indians. The games will be held Friday, March 26 at 1 and 3 p.m.
