GREENEVILLE, TENN. – The Queens University of Charlotte baseball team got a complete game one-hitter from starter
Nick Charleson in the first game of the day, leading to a doubleheader split with Tusculum University on Sunday in South Atlantic Conference play.
Game One: Queens 3, Tusculum 0 (Seven inn.)
Sunday's first game featured a gem on the mound from Queens starter Nick Charleston (2-2) who tossed his second straight complete game, limiting the Pioneers to just one hit while recording six strikeouts on the mound.
The Royals provided Charleson with all the run support he would need in the second inning, scoring twice on RBIs from
Noah Jones and
Nick Melton, to build an early 2-0 lead. Queens added an insurance run in the sixth inning as
Drake Harris hit his first home run of the season over the right field fence.
Game Two: Tusculum 11, Queens 4
In the series final, Queens rallied from a three-run deficit to tie the game in the sixth inning before the Pioneers scored eight runs across the sixth and seventh innings to avoid a sweep.
After the Pioneers went up early with a three-run third, Queens got on the scoreboard in the fifth when
Dominic Ford drove in a run with an RBI single and later scored on a Tusculum throwing error. The Royals evened the score just one inning later on a solo home run from Jones.
With the two sides even at 3-all, Tusculum responded with three runs in the home half of the sixth and added five runs in the fifth to build an 11-3 advantage with just two innings left to play. Harris recorded an RBI single in the top of the ninth, but the comeback fell short for the visitors.
Jones was 2-for-4 at the plate with a double, a home run and an RBI, while Ford was 2-for-5 with a double, two runs scored and an RBI. Catcher
Julian Bailey was also 2-for-5 in the contest and Harris was 1-for-3 with an RBI of his own.
Queens returns to Tennessee next weekend for a four-game conference series with Carson-Newman University on March 20-21 in Jefferson City, Tenn.
