Queens Rolls Past Mars Hill

MARS HILL, N.C.- The Queens University of Charlotte Royals won in comfortable fashion this afternoon beating the Lions of Mars Hill, 20-12. The win extends the team's win streak over the Lions to five straight and moves their record to 3-2 overall and an impressive 3-0 in conference.

The Royals attack trio was no match for their opponent as they caught lightning in a bottle and combined for 19 points. Quinn Tallant completed the almost unfathomable double hat trick and added an assist for seven points. Kealan Pilon also finished with seven points, scoring two while producing five assists. Tyler Ewen finished with three goals and two assists. The attacking trio was not alone in their domination as they received plenty of help from the midfield. Most notably, Austin Leonard was practically unguardable scoring at will. He ended the day with five goals. Dylan Boyer had eyes in the back of his head handing out three assists while Callin Harris had a solid performance adding two goals and an assist. Adam Barry's two goals round out Queens' scoring.

The Royals came out firing to start the game as Ewen opened the game's scoring just over a minute in. Tallant would bury shortly thereafter to give Queens an early 2-0 lead. Almost surprisingly, the Royals took their foot off the accelerator and wouldn't score for another eight minutes. During this time Mars Hill was able to put together a run, scoring three to take the lead. Pilon would break the offensive drought with under two and a half to play bringing the game level at 3-3. Pilon's unassisted effort got the gears moving and the offense started clicking once again. The Royals would end the first quarter with two goals in the last minute of play to take a 6-5 lead.

Queens' defense would have a few early hiccups in the second quarter allowing the Lions to take a 7-6 lead. However, Mars Hill's attack would be suppressed the reminder of the quarter as the Royals defense tightened the clamps and smothered their opponent. Queens would capitalize on this impressive defensive stand by scoring five unanswered goals to go into the half ahead 11-7.

The Royals came out of the break and completely imposed their will, thoroughly dismantling their opponent from top to bottom. Queens' offense was able to run a plethora of plays all working seamlessly, creating open looks, and yielding many goals. Harris' first goal encapsulated this as the unit executed a picture-perfect wheel, which ended with Pilon finding a naked Harris on the doorstep for an easy finish. The Royals would outscore the Lions, 8-1, in the quarter backed by another unrelenting defensive presence. Queens never let Mars Hill settle in on the offensive half keeping sticks in hands and bringing numbers to all ground balls. The Royals were also helped by immaculate wing play resulting in several fast-break opportunities. At the end of three, Queens held a commanding 19-8 advantage.

With a few key Royals resting for the entire fourth quarter, the final 15 minutes of action was plagued with a lot of yellow laundry on the field as thirteen penalties were called in the quarter. The Royals had to batten the hatches as they played the majority of the last twelve minutes a man down. Queens' man-down unit showed their merit, and the Royals were able to come away with the 20-12 victory.

Queens was able to control long stretches as they dominated all facets of the game as shown in the team stats. The Royals found the net almost twice as often as the Lions, finishing 35-18. Queens went perfect on the day clearing the ball 27-27. Mars Hill had continued success getting out of their own end finishing the day 15-24 for a 62 percent success rate. The Royals were ground ball warriors coming away with 43 as the Lions finished with 23. Queens was also able to win over half of the face offs ending the day 21-33.
