Royals Open SAC Play with Commanding Win Over Newberry

NEWBERRY, S.C.- The Queens Royals traveled to Newberry, South Carolina this afternoon for their first South Atlantic Conference contest of the 2021 season where they defeated the Wolves 26-6. With the win, the Royals move to 2-0 on the season and 1-0 in conference.
 
The Queens offense was unrelenting all game as 12 different Royals found the back of the net. Ally Blood led all scorers on the day with six points on five goals and an assist. A trio of Royals finished with four points as Carson Giordano and Kara Blanchard each posted two goals and two assists, and Caroline Pearce tallied four goals. Kaitlyn Hardin completed the hat trick and Kyleigh Masteran also totaled three points with two goals and an assist. Sydney Bracken and Jordan Brown both picked up a pair of goals. Solo goals from Stephanie Joyce, Rachel Perrett, Colby Dugdale, and Maura O'Donoghue rounded out Queens scoring.
 
Queens did not waste any time in the first half jumping all over their opponent and scoring within the games' opening minute. The Royals didn't slow down and amassed a four-goal lead just five minutes into the game. Blood broke up a pair of Wolves goals as Queens held a 5-2 lead after 10 minutes of play. Once Newberry cut into their lead the Royals responded with a dominant 10-minute run which saw Queens hold the Wolves without a goal and put up five goals. This offensive explosion gave the Royals a healthy 10-2 lead.
 
Newberry was able to end the drought with their first goal in nearly 11 minutes, but Queens didn't let the Wolves breathe as they unleashed yet another run where the Royals' high-powered offense scored three times in less than three minutes. Queens capped off a blistering first half with a pair of goals to take a 15-4 advantage into the break.
 
The Royals started off right back where they finished as they came out flying in the second half. Queens went on a 7-0 run dominating all facets of the game spanning nearly 17 minutes, which all but put the Royals out of reach. The Wolves were able to put together a late burst of three goals, but Queens put the cherry on top of an impressive win with a four-goal dash to end the game.
 
Queens controlled the game from start to finish, which was evident in the post-game stats. The Royals outshot the Wolves, 38-15, and were able to hit the net more consistently outperforming their counterpart, 28-12. Queens was able to limit turnovers committing only 10 while on the other side Newberry had 15.  The Royals were near perfection on the clear, successfully doing so 8 of 9 times for an 88% success rate. Newberry had a tough time all day cracking Queens' ride, as the Wolves were only able to clear the ball 6 out of 15 attempts for a 40% success rate. The Royals were able to control possession of the ball, winning 17 draw controls as Newberry came away with 11. Queens also won the battle for ground balls winning 13 as compared to the Wolves 7.
 
The Royals are back in action Saturday, February 27 as they take on the sixth-ranked UIndy Greyhounds at the Queens Sports Complex. The game is scheduled for a 12 p.m. start.
