CHARLOTTE, N.C. – The No. 20/25 Queens University of Charlotte men's basketball team collected its third win of the week on Saturday afternoon, taking down the Cavaliers of UVA Wise by a score of 108-88 inside Curry Arena on Homecoming.
The Royals (12-4, 11-3 SAC) tied a program record with 19 made 3-pointers, going 19-for-41 from deep as five different players knocked down a shot from deep. Redshirt-freshman
AJ McKee scored a career-high 32 points, making 6-of-11 attempts from long range to go along with a career-high eight assists in 32 minutes of action.
After UVA Wise (3-13, 2-13 SAC) opened the game with six unanswered points, Queens redshirt-sophomore
Jamari Smith scored eight straight points to put Queens ahead by two. The Royals never trailed again, shooting 68.6 percent from the floor in the opening half to carry a 62-43 lead into intermission.
Out of the halftime break, Wise closed the gap to a 13-point deficit at 75-62 with just under 12 minutes to play as the Cavaliers were 19-of-39 from deep in the game.
Consecutive jumpers from sophomore
Gavin Rains and McKee got Queens back on track as a 3-pointer from McKee with 7:14 remaining gave the Royals their largest lead of the half at 94-70. Freshman
Kalib Mathews put the icing on the cake with two late 3-pointers to seal the Royals third straight win.
Smith finished with a double-double of 17 points and 14 rebounds, while junior
Kenny Dye recorded a double-double of his own with 16 points and 11 assists. Junior
Quan McCluney followed with 15 points and Rains chipped in 14 points, shooting 7-for-8 from the floor.
Queens returns to the road for its next contest on Monday, February 15 as the team travels to Anderson, S.C. for a 5:30 p.m. matchup with the Trojans of Anderson University.
