Royals Come Up Short at Newberry

NEWBERRY, S.C.- The Queens University of Charlotte Women's basketball team (2-5, 1-5 SAC) suffered a 65-57 loss on the road to the Newberry College Wolves (2-6, 2-4 SAC) on Wednesday evening at Eleazer Arena.

Queens' Kristy Hamze led all on the court with 17 points after connecting on 8-of-9 from the foul line. Kalaya Hall finished with nine points and four rebounds while Kiana Barkhoff led the way under the glass with seven boards and a career-high nine blocks. Freshman forward Finley Lefevers had a career-high eight points shooting 4-of-6 from the field.

After getting off to a slow start, a bucket from Queens' Hamze knotted the game at 2-2 with 7:55 to play. The tie would be the first of three in the quarter which also saw five lead changes. Trailing 11-9 with 3:04 to play, the Royals' Hall and Levefers knocked down back-to-back shots to give Queens a 13-11 lead heading into the second.

The Royals and Wolves continued their up and down play well into the second quarter as a fastbreak layup from Hamze tied things again at 22-22 with 4:04 on the clock. Queens then went cold offensively as they were not able to score another field goal before halftime as the Wolves closed with an 11-2 run to take a 33-24 lead at the break.

Three straight triples from Newberry's Giulia Bongiorono at the start of the third helped the Wolves' quickly increase their lead to 16, 42-26. The margin would swell to 20 points before Hamze scored five consecutive points at the close of the period to bring the Royals back within 13, 54-41, heading in to the final quarter.

A 12-1 push for the Royals in the final period capped by a jumper from Amari Davis cut Queens' deficit to six, 61-55, with 2:55 on the clock. However, Davis' jumper would be the final field goal of the night for the Royals as the Wolves were able to hang on for the win capitalizing on their chances at the free-throw line late in the game.

Ericka Wiseley led the Wolves with 15 points and eight rebounds while Tyla Stolberg added 14 points and seven rebounds.

The Royals will be home in Curry Arena on Saturday, Dec. 11 taking on Coker University at 2 p.m. Saturday's game will also be the Royals' Mental Health Awareness game.
