CHARLOTTE, N.C. – The Queens University of Charlotte women's basketball team (2-4, 1-4 SAC) will look to grab another road win on Wednesday, Dec. 8 when they travel to take on the Newberry College Wolves (1-6, 1-4 SAC).
LAST TIME OUT
-The Royals won their first South Atlantic Conference game of the season defeating the Mars Hill University Lions on Saturday, Dec. 4 by a score of 68-65. Queens led by as much as 18 points before having to hold off a fourth-quarter push by the Lions to secure their victory.
-
Kalaya Hall led all on the court with 23 points, while
Kristy Hamze added a season-high 18 points. Kiana Barkhoof totaled six points and 11 rebounds.
ABOUT THE ROYALS
-Queens is currently led by Hall who is averaging 18 points per game this season. She also ranks third currently in the SAC in points per game. Additionally, Hamze is averaging 11.3 points per game. Barkhoff tops the league and the Royals with 2.7 blocks per game and has a total of 16 so far in the season. She is also averaging 6.7 rebounds per game, while
Taylor Stevens tops the league with 5.0 assists per game.
-The Royals opened their season with a win over Emory & Henry. It is the first time that Queens has kicked off their season in the win column since 2015. Two of their opponents since then have been nationally ranked.
-Head Coach
Jen Brown is in her second season leading the Royals. Queens enters the year in rebuilding mode welcoming six newcomers to a squad of nine returners.
ABOUT THE WOLVES
-Newberry is currently in the hunt for their second win of the season and on a four-game losing streak. Most recently, the Wolves suffered a 67-54 loss at UVA Wise.
-Talia Roberts is leading the Wolves in points averaging 10 per game, while four players are putting at least seven points per game up for Newberry. Mylaysia Gates is putting up 7.9 points per game and grabbing 8 boards per game. Giulia Bongiorno and Payton Cronen are each averaging 7.7 points per game.
SERIES HISTORY
-Newberry leads the series with the Royals, 17-6. The Royals suffered a 99-54 loss to Newberry on Jan. 27, 2021 in Newberry, S.C. Hall led the Royals with 18 points, five rebounds, and three steals after recording a career-high five made three-pointers.
Taylor Stevens added 11 points and a career-high of six assists.
Christina Deng totaled 10 points, and
Amari Davis led under the glass with six rebounds.
-Queens looks to snap a three-game losing streak to the Wolves. Their last win came on Feb. 13, 2019 when they defeated Newberry 79-57.
