CHARLOTTE, N.C. – The Royals took down Newberry College (7-6, 4-5) in a 4-3 overtime win at Bessant Field this evening to improve to 6-9 on the year. They also close out conference play at 5-7 with the final three games on their regular-season schedule being nonconference matches.
Senior midfielder
Victoria Tredinnick sealed the win for the Royals scoring the game's golden goal just over five minutes into the overtime period. She finished the game with two goals.
The Royals had opportunities to jump on the board early in tonight's game but were unable to capitalize. During the first quarter, Newberry was able to put two goals past Queens goalkeeper
Avian Thompson in the 25th and 26th minutes.
Queens would cut Newberry's lead in half on a late second-quarter goal from Tredinnick in the 29th minute, and the Wolves took the 2-1 lead into the half.
The Royals came out strong in the second half as
Sofia Arato scored her first goal of the season in the 34th minute to knot the match at 2-2. Shortly after, Newberry was able to retake the lead in the 41st minute.
With the time dwindling down in the fourth, Queens looked to their top goal scorer,
Gabe Lechner, who tied the game with just 34 seconds remaining in regulation to force overtime. The equalizer was her 11
th goal on the season.
The Royals were outshot, 12-8, in the game putting five of their shots on goal.
Avian Thompson recorded the win in net making nine saves.
