ATHENS, GA. - The Queens University of Charlotte men's rugby team opened their spring 7s season Saturday with a first place win in the UGA 7s Tournament hosted by the University of Georgia.
The Royals, in their first match of the day, defeated Clemson University's A-squad 15-7.
Stanton Johnson,
Dominic Tianga, and
Alex Lawson each scored one try to lead Queens to victory.
In match two, Queens faced Auburn University winning 24-5.
Jharid Morrison led the Royals with two tries, while
Thomas Keay and
Doyle Hedgepeth each scored one. Keay also added two conversions in the match.
Queens then took on Valdosta State University shutting them out 47-0. Seven Royals scored a try each in the win, including
Marshall Frank,
Jack Williams,
Alston Burton, Keay, Tianga, Johnson, and Lawson. Freshman Williams led in conversions with four, while Keay tallied two as well.
The Royals battled UGA B-squad next, defeating the Bulldogs 31-12. Hedgepeth led the charge with two tries in the match, followed by Chris Tomlinson, Lawson, and Williams who each tallied one. Additionally, Williams added another two conversions (six total on the day) and Lawson added one.
Advancing to the final match of the day, the Royals took on Kennesaw State University winning 31-7. Johnson and Keay lead all scorers with two tries each while Morrison also recorded one. Keay kicked three more conversions in the match, totaling seven on the day along with four total tries. Johnson also recorded four tries total on the day.
The squad will continue their spring season traveling to North Carolina State University next Saturday, March 21. The tournament schedule will be released at a later date.
