Royals Win in Walk-Off Fashion, Split Saturday Twin Bill with LMU

Saturday's split give Queens baseball its first series win in program history

CHARLOTTE, N.C. – The Queens University of Charlotte baseball team split a doubleheader with Lincoln Memorial University on Saturday afternoon from the Tuckaseegee Dream Fields, winning game one 2-1 before falling in the finale by a 5-1 score. The split gave the Royals their first series win in program history.

Game One: Queens 2, Lincoln Memorial 1

The Royals and Railsplitters were locked in pitcher's dual in the first game of the day as LMU took an early 1-0 lead in the first inning. However, an RBI single from junior Chris Brady in the fourth would tie the score at 1-all.

Both sides remained deadlocked at one until the bottom of the ninth when sophomore Nick Brassington led off the inning with a walk and advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt by senior Drake Harris. Sophomore Alex Sexton stepped to the plate and brought Brassington home with a walk-off RBI single for the Royals.

Freshman right-hander Jeffery Maidhof kept the Lincoln Memorial offense in check, allowing just one run on five hits with six strikeouts in eight innings of work but received the no decision. Junior Madisyn Bolin (1-1) got the win after entering in the ninth and tossing a perfect inning of relief.

Junior RJ Conner was 2-for-3 with a double and a stolen base, while Brady and Sexton were also 2-for-3 with an RBI each.

Game Two: Lincoln Memorial 5, Queens 1 (Seven inn.)

The scoring got started early again in the series final as Lincoln Memorial got a solo home run from Nate Stinson before the Royals tied it up in the bottom of the frame with an RBI from redshirt-sophomore Noah Jones.

Lincoln Memorial took a 2-1 lead in the top of the second and added three insurance runs in the sixth to seal the four-run road win and avoid the sweep.

Sophomore Tanner Jacobson (0-3) suffered the loss after giving up four runs (two earned) on four hits with six strikeouts. Fellow sophomore Zach Kelly and redshirt-sophomore Wes Boling combined for two innings of relief out of the bullpen.

At the plate, Conner was once again 2-for-3, while redshirt-junior Mason Pickard went 1-or-3 with a run scored and redshirt-sophomore Greyson Haller was 1-for-2.

Queens returns to the diamond on Tuesday, February 25 for a non-conference matchup with Belmont Abbey College in Belmont, N.C. First pitch is scheduled for 5 p.m. between the crosstown rivals.
