CHARLOTTE, N.C. – In a game that saw neither side shoot above 40 percent from the floor and featured a combined 41 turnovers, the Wolves of Newberry College came away with a 49-42 win over the Queens University of Charlotte women's basketball team on Wednesday night inside Curry Arena.
Both sides got off to a slow starting, combining for just 16 points in the game's opening quarter. However, the Wolves outscored Queens 13-9 in the second period to take a 23-15 lead into the halftime break.
Junior
Kristian Eanes opened the second half with a layup to cut the deficit to six before Newberry scored four consecutive points to extend the lead to a 10-point edge at 27-17 with 6:18 to play in the third quarter.
In the fourth, a 3-pointer from Newberry's Kelsey McDermott put the Wolves ahead once again by double digits, 38-28, before six unanswered points for the Royals cut the lead to four. Newberry was able to fend off the rally and secure the road win.
Eanes led all players with 17 points on 7-for-15 shooting from the floor to go along with five rebounds. Fellow junior
Caitlyn Moore followed with six points, while
Julia Raflund grabbed a team-high eight rebounds.
Queens goes on the road this weekend for a matchup with Carson-Newman University on Saturday, January 11 at 2 p.m. in Jefferson City, Tennessee.
