HOWEY-IN-THE-HILLS, Fla. – Following a first round of the play where Queens University of Charlotte shot a 306, the Royals sit just nine strokes outside of the top five in 11
th place heading into the second round of play at the 2019 NCAA Division II Men's Golf South/Southeast Regional. Leading the field of 20 teams is No. 10 Lincoln Memorial with a three-under-par 285. No. 2 Lynn and No. 3 West Florida trail tied in second after each totaled even 288s.
"It was a decent start to the tournament for us today, said Queens head men's golf coach
Andrew Serketich. "The golf course is challenging and that was compounded with a good breeze for most of our round."
This year, the golfers are playing the El Campeón Golf Course at the Mission Inn Resort & Club. The 18-hole course is described as one of the South's oldest golf courses which blends unusual Central Florida elevation changes of more than 85 feet with features of traditional golf design, including spectacular rolling fairways and undulating greens. The Greater Orlando Sports Commission and Rollins College are serving as Regional site hosts.
Taisuke Ono leads the Royals on day after carding a 73 with one birdie and 15 holes scored at par. He currently sits tied in 13
th place while
Ethan Willis is tied for 32
nd after finishing play in the morning with a 75.
Jonathan Noble shot a 78 to sit tied for 59
th and
Henry Bryden carded an 80 to tie for 81
st. Additionally,
Elis Lewis finished play with an 87.
"Taisuke had a very solid round today," Serketich added. "He kept a pretty clean scorecard. Ethan and Jon had some really solid stretches and are in good form going into round two.
We are excited to get back out there tomorrow afternoon!"
USC Aiken's August Lindvall is tied with Lincoln Memorial's Sam Broadhurst and Dan Bradbury for first place after all three golfers carded a three-under-par 69 today.
Tomorrow's second round will begin with the first wave teeing off at 7:30 a.m. The afternoon wave will get going at noon. At a minimum, the top three teams and the top two student-athletes not with a team from each regional will advance to the finals May 20-24 at The Resort at Glade Springs in Daniels, West Virginia. The remaining eight team berths will be allocated based on the regions represented in the prior year's head-to-head medal play portion of the championships, with the maximum number of teams from a given region capped at seven. The finals will be hosted by the Mountain East Conference.
