SALISBURY, N.C. – Freshman right-hander
Tanner Jacobson shut down a potent Catawba College offense as the Queens University of Charlotte baseball team tallied a 5-2 upset victory over the 14
th-ranked Indians at Newman Park on Sunday afternoon.
Jacobson (2-0) earned the victory after tossing eight innings on the mound, allowing just two runs (one earned) on two hits with a season-high eight strikeouts. Fellow freshman
Daniel Bagwell collected his first career save after pitching a scoreless ninth inning.
Queens (11-25, 4-14 SAC) struck first with an RBI single from redshirt-
Anthony Orta in the opening inning of play. Catawba tied the score at 1-all in the fourth with a solo home run and took a 2-1 lead in the fifth.
The Royals responded with three runs in the top half of the sixth, scoring on an RBI single from freshman
Alex Sexton and a two-RBI double from redshirt-freshman
Austin Campbell. Redshirt-freshman
Noah Jones belted his team-leading ninth home run in the seventh inning to provide an insurance run for the visitors.
Freshman
Evan Dix started the ninth inning out of the bullpen but allowed the first two runners her faced to reach base, giving way to Bagwell. The Kings Mountain, N.C. native got all three outs in the inning, including a strikeout, to leave runners stranded on second and third to end the ball game.
Jones was 2-for-5 with a home run and an RBI in the contest, while Campbell was 1-for-4 with a double and two RBI. Orta and Sexton had one RBI each in the game as redshirt-sophomore
Dominic Ford was 3-for-5 at the plate. Every Royal had at least one hit in the win.
Queens continues it current six-game road trip with a crosstown matchup with Belmont Abbey College on Tuesday, April 9 in Belmont, N.C. First pitch is scheduled for 6 p.m. against the Crusaders.
