CHARLOTTE, N.C. – The Queens University of Charlotte men's volleyball team made Senior Day one to remember for the Class of 2019, defeating Limestone College 3-2 (25-18, 25-27, 25-21, 21-25, 15-11) to end the regular season inside Curry Arena.
In a pre-match ceremony, Queens (9-18) honored its three-member senior class of
Hunter Gray,
Alexander Schinzing, and
Marco Vecellio for their contributions to the program in its short two-year history.
Queens opened the match with a dominant offense performance, hitting .448 as a team to go up 1-0 in the match. The Royals cooled off a bit in the second set and committed five service errors, allowing Limestone (13-12) to tie the score at one-all.
Limestone held an early two-point lead in the third set before a kill from sophomore
Nic Cavallaro sparked a run of six unanswered points to put the Royals in front and lead the team to 2-1 match advantage. Cavallaro led all players with a match-high 24 kills and 17 digs while hitting .391from the outside.
The fourth set once again saw Queens take a dip in offensive production that kept the match alive with a Limestone win.
The Saints carried momentum into the deciding fifth set and held a 7-5 lead until Cavallaro once again sparked a Queens' run with back-to-back kills. The Royals ended the match with consecutive kills from sophomores
Josh Bragg and
Cody Nix to earn the upset.
Bragg recorded 12 kills and six digs, while Nix tallied 10 kills and a .529 hitting percentage from the middle. Schinzing paced the offense with 52 assists and 13 digs for his second double-double and Vecellio finished with a career-high four service aces.
Queens' season continues in the postseason next weekend when the Royals travel to Harrogate, Tenn. to compete in the IVA Championships on the campus of Lincoln Memorial University.
