WINGATE, N.C. – Freshman
Daniel Bagwell turned in his second consecutive complete game performance and
Anthony Orta and
Nick Melton each had three RBI in game two as the Queens University of Charlotte baseball team split a Saturday doubleheader with Wingate University at Ron Christopher Field.
Game One: Wingate 8, Queens 7
The Royals tied the score in the ninth inning of game one only to have the Bulldogs pull out the win in walk-off fashion with a one-out RBI single to end the game.
Queens got on the scoreboard first with three runs in the third inning, including an RBI double from redshirt sophomore
Dominic Ford, to build the early lead. However, Wingate responded with a five-run fourth to go in front by a 5-3 score.
After Queens put runners on the corners with one out in the top half of the fifth, freshman
Alex Sexton belted his fourth home run of the season, a three-run shot, over the wall in left center to put the Royals back in front 6-5.
Wingate scratched a run across in the sixth to even the score before taking the lead with a run in the seventh inning of play.
In the top of the ninth, Orta hit a solo home run down the left field line to put the Royals back in front with just one half inning to play. Wingate got a runner on base with one out in the home half as Hunter Dula's RBI single gave his team the win in dramatic fashion.
Freshman right-hander
Zach Kelly did not factor in the decision after tossing seven innings and allowing seven runs (six earned) on seven hits with a career-high nine strikeouts. Junior
Lee Harrison (0-6) suffered the loss after giving up just one run on one hit in 1.1 innings of relief.
Orta finished the game 3-for-5 with a home run and an RBI, while Sexton was 2-for-5 with a home run and three RBI of his own. Ford, freshman
Nick Brassington, and redshirt-junior
CJ Hammonds each had a double in the contest.
Game Two: Queens 10, Wingate 4 (Seven inn.)
Bagwell (1-2) earned his first career win in the second game of the day after holding the Bulldogs to four runs on six hits with six strikeouts across seven innings of work.
A three-run first inning, highlighted by RBI singles from Sexton and fellow freshman
Nick Melton, put Queens ahead early and the Royals never looked back. After scoring twice in the second inning on Orta's two-run single, the Royals never trailed en route to the victory.
Queens put a stamp on the win with five runs in the seventh inning of play, including an RBI single from redshirt-freshman
Austin Campbell and an RBI double from freshman
Anthony Molinari, to seal the decision.
Orta was a perfect 3-for-3 in game two, collecting two RBI and scoring two runs. Ford was 3-for-4 with three runs scored and a stolen base, while Sexton was 2-for-3 with an RBI and a run scored.
The Royals and Bulldogs will complete the regular season with a single game on Monday night at 6 p.m. from Wingate, N.C.
