Royals Earn Extra-Inning Win Over Patriots

FLORENCE, S.C. – The Queens University of Charlotte baseball team salvaged a split in the season series with Francis Marion University, collecting a 13-12 win over the Patriots in extra innings on Tuesday night at Sparrow Stadium.

The Royals outhit the Patriots 17-11 in the contest to pick up their 10th win of the season. Francis Marion fell to 20-15 overall with the loss.

After the Patriots took an early one-run lead after two innings, Queens built a 7-1 lead in the fifth inning before Francis Marion cut the deficit in half with three runs in the bottom of the fifth inning.

The Royals held a 10-6 lead through six innings of action until FMU registered three more runs in the seventh inning to cut the Queens lead to one run. Francis Marion clawed its way back to tie the game at 12-all, scoring three unearned runs in the eighth and ninth innings combined to force extra innings.

Freshman Nick Brassington led off the 10th inning with a double, his third of the game, and later scored on a wild pitch to give Queens the edge. Fellow freshman Alec Hunter (1-1) picked up his first career win, shutting down the Patriot offense with a scoreless home half.

Brassington finished 4-for-5 at the plate with three doubles, three RBI, three runs scored, and two stolen bases, while fellow freshman Tanner Jacobson was 3-for-5 with two doubles, three RBI, and four runs scored. Redshirt-freshman Noah Jones was also 3-for-5 with two runs scored. Dominic Ford, Nick Melton, and Alex Sexton also recorded an RBI in the contest.

Freshman right-hander Evan Dix got the start for Queens, allowing just one run on one hit with three strikeouts in three innings. Jack Bergren, Wes Boling, Jake Michna, and Daniel Bagwell combined for five innings of relief out of the bullpen.

The Royals remain on the road for a three-game series this weekend in Salisbury, N.C. against South Atlantic Conference rival Catawba College.
