No. 10 Queens Sets New Program Win-Streak Record Defeating Newberry

NEWBERRY, S.C.  –  The 10th-ranked Queens University of Charlotte men's lacrosse team defeated Newberry College, 14-9, on the road this evening to move to 11-1 on the year and 6-0 in South Atlantic Conference play. The win also helps the Royals set a new program record in win streaks at eight.
 
Following a tightly contested opening quarter where the Royals came out on top, 3-2, Newberry put together a 3-0 run to take a 5-4 lead in the second. A goal from Queens' A.J. Curtiss with just 34-seconds on the clock would knot the game at 5-5 heading into the halftime break.
 
In the third, sophomore attacker Kealan Pilon found the back of the net early to put the Royals back in front, 6-5, but the Wolves responded with three unanswered goals to take an 8-6 lead with 8:56 on the clock. A pair of back-to-back goals from Pilon soon followed sparking a 5-0 run for Queens putting them back in front,11-8, and in control of the game for good.
 
The Royals then added three insurance goals to the board in the fourth while holding the Wolves to just one more point to secure their eighth win in a row.
 
Pilon led the Royals with a career-high five goals while David Byrne added three points with two goals and one assist. Quinn Tallant, Laszlo Henning, and A.J. Curtiss added two goals each. In goal, Anthony Valenza picked up his second win in a row after totaling nine saves.
 
Queens outshot Newberry 36-27, putting 26 shots on goal. Additionally, the Royals totaled 35 ground balls with senior defender Griffin Stechmiller's career-high 10 leading the way. Stechmiller also recorded four caused turnovers and an assist.
 
Stone Boone led Newberry with a hat trick while Dylan Mansur totaled four points on one goal and three assists. In goal, Erick Szurley totaled 12 saves in 60 minutes.
 
Queens will be back in action on Saturday, April 13 when they travel to face No. 19 Catawba in Salisbury, N.C. The game is scheduled to begin at 1 p.m.
