GAFFNEY, S.C. – A six-run second inning sparked the Limestone College Saints to an 11-3 win over the Queens University of Charlotte baseball team on Tuesday night at Founders FCU Stadium.
Redshirt-junior
Max Fries got his first career start and held the Saints (9-22) scoreless in first inning. However, fellow redshirt-junior
Jack Bergren (3-4) entered the game in the second inning and gave up five runs on six hits in just 2/3 of an inning.
The Limestone lead jumped to a 10-0 advantage in the fourth inning of play before Queens (8-21) got on the scoreboard when freshman
Alex Sexton scored from third on a wild pitch.
Freshman
Tanner Jacobson hit a solo home run in the fifth and Sexton followed with a solo shot of his own in the seventh to provide the offense for the Royals.
Redshirt-freshman
Nick Nelson also allowed five runs on six hits in 2.1 innings of relief, while
Kollin Schrenk,
Alec Hunter, and
Madisyn Bolin combined to pitch the final four innings out of the bullpen and keep the Limestone offense in check.
Sexton was 1-for-4 at the plate with a home run, an RBI and two runs scored. Redshirt-freshman
Noah Jones was 2-for-5 with two doubles and redshirt-sophomore
Dominic Ford also turned in a 2-for-5 performance with three stolen bases.
Queens returns to South Atlantic Conference play this weekend when the team hosts Mars Hill University for a three-game series in Kannapolis. Friday's first pitch from Intimidators Stadium is scheduled for 6 p.m.
