Another Valchar Walk-Off Leads Royals to Sweep of Catawba

Courtney Pearson and Shannon McGuire pick up wins as Queens moves to 3-1 in SAC play this season

CHARLOTTE, N.C. – Sydney Ditto homered and batted in four runs, Grace Valchar notched her second walk-off hit in the last five games, and the Queens University of Charlotte softball team (13-5, 3-1 SAC) won both games of its South Atlantic Conference doubleheader against Catawba College (14-11, 2-2 SAC) on Tuesday from Park Road Park.

Game One: Queens 9, Catawba 4

Behind the bat of Ditto and the arm of Courtney Pearson, the Royals took down the Indians handily in game one of the doubleheader action on Tuesday, winning 9-4. Pearson, the reigning SAC Pitcher of the Week, logged 4.1 innings to pick up the win, as she moves to 8-1 on the season, while Ditto cranked her third long-ball of the year with three-run shot to center field in the third inning to make the score 3-1 in the third inning.

From there, the Royals never looked back. The Indians scored two unearned runs in the fourth inning to tie the game at three runs apiece, but a go-ahead triple to right field by Valchar in the bottom of the frame propelled Queens to a two-run lead. Robinson singled home Valchar in the next at-bat, and Ditto eventually hit a sacrifice fly in the same inning, and the Royals finished the fourth with a four-run lead, 7-3.

Led by an RBI triple to right center by Gerlea Patton, scoring Alyssa Strickler, Queens added two runs to its lead in the fifth, stretching it to 9-3.

The Royals finished game one with seven hits, including a team-high three hits by Patton. Patton, the Royals' leadoff hitter, leads the team in hits this season with 23, while batting .383 at the plate.

Game Two: Queens 2, Catawba 1

Led by seven innings of one-run ball in the circle by McGuire, Queens held down Catawba just long enough to allow Valchar to notch her second walk-off hit of the season and second in the last five games.

After allowing one run to cross the plate in the top of the second inning, the Royals immediately bounced back in the bottom of the frame with a run of their own, thanks to a Valchar single to center field, to knot the game at one-run apiece. Valchar, the hero, recorded both RBIs for the game and finished the day with three hits, four runs batted in and one run scored.

After McGuire blanked the Indians for the final five frames, and following a double to right field to start the inning by Jordan Hunt, Valchar came through in the bottom of the seventh and scored the run from second with a single to center field to end the game.

With the win, McGuire improves to 4-3 on the season, while Queens improves to 13-5.

The Royals will now hit the road for its next four matchups. First up, they will take on Lincoln Memorial on Saturday, March 23 in Harrogate, Tenn. First pitch of the doubleheader is slated for 1 p.m.
