BRISTOL, TENN. – Despite winning the opening two sets of action, the Queens University of Charlotte men's volleyball team fell 3-2 (25-27, 14-25, 25-19, 25-19, 15-10) on Friday night inside the Student Center Complex.
Queens (4-14) and King (10-5) traded points for the entirety of the first set with the Tornado holding a 23-21 advantage before Queens Head Coach
Jeremy Price called his final timeout. The Royals responded with a rally, completing the comeback with a kill from sophomore
Nic Cavallaro to take the match lead.
The Royals hit a scorching .519 in the second set of action to win the game 25-14 before King kept the match alive with a win of their own in the third set of play.
King claimed an early lead in the fourth set and held on for a six-point win to even the match at 2-all. The two sides remained close for much of the fifth and final set as Queens tied the set at 8-8 on a
Tristan Santoyo kill. However, the Tornado closed the frame on a 7-2 run to complete the comeback.
Cavallaro led all players with a career-high 28 kills and hit .479 from the right side, while Santoyo followed with 12 kills, six digs and two service aces.
Sophomore middle
JP Payne hit .350 and collected 10 kills as senior
Alexander Schinzing had a season-high 58 assists. Sophomore
Josh Bragg chipped in a career-high 18 digs on defense and fellow sophomore
Ruben Greenstein turned in 12 digs from the back row.
Queens will take a week off during the University's annual Spring Break before returning to action on Wednesday, March 13 when the Royals host Belmont Abbey College at 7 p.m. inside Curry Arena.
