ST. AUGUSTINE, FLA. – The Queens University of Charlotte baseball team scored three runs across the final two innings of play but came up short in a 6-3 loss to Flagler College on Friday evening in the first game of a three-game series.
The Saints (4-1) jumped out to an early 4-0 lead, including a three-run second inning.
Flagler tacked on two more runs in the fifth to build a 6-0 lead and give starter Derick Garcia all the cushion he would need. Garcia picked up his second win of the season after tossing seven scoreless innings with 12 strikeouts and no walks.
Queens was able to take advantage of the Flagler bullpen as an RBI single from freshman
Griffin Hughes put the Royals on the scoreboard in the top of the eighth inning.
The Royals looked to rally with two outs in the top of the ninth, starting with a pinch-hit single from redshirt-freshman
Greyson Haller. Haller scored on an RBI single from fellow redshirt-freshman
Aaron Douglas. Another RBI single from redshirt-sophomore
Dominic Ford kept the rally alive before he was thrown out at second trying to advance on a throw from the outfield to end the game.
Redshirt-freshman
Nick Nelson (1-1) was hit with the loss after allowing six runs on 10 hits with five walks and four strikeouts. Fellow redshirt-freshman
Wes Boling was nearly perfect in three innings of relief, allowing just one base runner and recording three strikeouts.
Ford led the offense with a 3-for-5 performance, tallying an RBI and two stolen bases. Douglas was 1-for-2 with an RBI and a run scored, while freshman
Tanner Jacobson was 2-for-2 with a double and a run scored.
Queens and Flagler conclude the weekend series tomorrow with a doubleheader beginning at Noon from Drysdale Field.
