CHARLOTTE, N.C. – The Queens University of Charlotte women's lacrosse team picked up its first win of the 2019 season this afternoon defeating Belmont Abbey College, 18-8. The win improves the Royals' record to 1-1 on the year while the Crusaders fall to 1-3.
Both
Ally Blood and
Hanna Scott finished today's game with four goals to lead Queens. Scott also recorded two assists giving her six points on the day.
Sydney Bracken and
Rachel Perrett added two goals apiece. Defensively,
Cammy Case led totaling four caused turnovers while Sara Metrecic totaled seven saves to record the win in goal.
Leading 2-1, Queens scored seven unanswered goals to increase their lead to eight, 9-1, with 18:20 to play in the first half. The Crusaders found a goal at 18:01 to make the score 9-2, but three in a row from Queens swelled the game's margin to 10 enforcing the running clock rule. The home team would eventually take a 14-3 lead into the locker room.
Out of the break, two quick goals from Queens gave the game a 16-3 score. Belmont Abbey's offense tried to get hot finding the back of the net three times in a row to cut the lead to 10, but a goal from Queens' Katilyn Hardin at 13:55 helped to ensure the continuance of the running clock, which proved to be too much for the Crusaders to overcome.
Queens outshot Belmont Abbey 29-22, putting 24 shots on goal compared to the Crusaders' 15 shots on frame. The Royals also won the battle for draw controls, 14-13, and ground balls, 14-12.
Marlin Felsoci led Belmont Abbey with three goals while Kylie Eastman added one goal and four assists. Anne Brannon took the loss in goal after recording six saves in 48:20.
Queens will be on the road at No. 10 Florida Tech on Sunday, March 3 for their next game. The Royals fell 17-8 to the Panthers a season ago. Play is scheduled to begin at 3 p.m.
