CHARLOTTE, N.C. – Up 14 points at halftime, the 10
th-ranked Queens University of Charlotte men's basketball team (23-3, 15-1 SAC) scored 66 second-half points and ran away from Newberry College (9-14, 4-11 SAC), 115-84, on Wednesday night at the Levine Center.
Shaun Willett led Queens with 24 points and 16 rebounds to earn his NCAA-leading 22
nd double-double of the season.
Kenny Dye set a new career high with 18 points and
Blake Morrow tied a season-high, also scoring 18.
Van Turner Jr. and
Kevion Blaylock hit double figures as well, scoring 16 and 12 points, respectively, as the Royals won their fourth straight game and won for the 18
th time in the last 19 games overall.
After a back-and-forth first half, Queens held a two-point lead, 34-32, with 3:59 remaining before halftime. The Royals then went on a 15-3 run that featured spurts of four-straight points from Morrow and four-straight points from Dye and was capped by a 3-pointer from Turner that put Queens ahead, 49-35, at the break.
In the second half, Dye opened the scoring with a jumper in the paint, which was followed by a three-point play from Willett, that gave Queens a 5-0 advantage to open the frame. With 18:48 to play, Queens led, 54-35.
Moments later, back-to-back 3's from Dye and Willett stretched the Queens lead to 22, 60-38, with 17:47 remaining. The lead later hit a 30-point margin after Morrow's layup with 11:47 to play gave the Royals and 81-51 advantage.
The lead hit its peak of 37 points after a fast-break layup by Turner gave Queens a 104-67 edge with 4:14 left.
In the second half, Queens shot 63.4 percent from the floor, and in total, shot 55.3 percent from the field and 33.3 percent from the 3-point line. The Royals compiled 23 assists on 42 made field goals, outrebounded the Wolves 54-29, and held Newberry to 40.8-percent shooting for the game and 21.1 percent from beyond the arc.
Newberry was led by Angelo Sales Jr. who scored 19 points.
