WILSON, N.C. – The Queens University of Charlotte baseball team was unable to hold on to a late lead, falling 6-4 to Barton College in Wednesday afternoon at Nixon Field.
The Royals (2-7) scored the game's first run in the top of the third on an RBI from redshirt-freshman
Noah Jones before taking a 3-1 lead in top of the sixth on two-run home run from the bat of redshirt-junior
CJ Hammonds.
Barton (5-4) took advantage of three Queens fielding errors to score three runs in the seventh inning and go ahead by a 4-3 score. The Bulldogs added two more insurance runs in the top of the eighth, leaving Queens with just one inning to make a comeback.
Redshirt-junior
Chase Hager led off the ninth with a double and later advanced to third before scoring on an RBI single from redshirt-sophomore
Dominic Ford. However, Queens saw just one pitch across the final two batters to end the rally efforts.
Hammonds was 2-for-4 at the plate with a home run, a run scored and two RBI, while fellow redshirt-junior
Ryan Dudney was also 2-for-4 with a double, and triple and a run scored. Hager and freshman
Jaret Lazich were each 1-for-3 with a double in the contest.
Freshman
Landen Wright got the start and went two scoreless innings with two strikeouts before giving way to fellow freshman
Daniel Bagwell who gave up just one run on three hits with a strikeout in two innings of relief.
Right-handed junior
Lee Harrison (0-1) was hit with the loss after allowing three runs (one earned) on two hits with two strikeouts in three innings. Freshman
Zach Kelly pitched the final inning, giving up two runs on two hits with a strikeout.
Queens continue its seven-game road trip this weekend as they travel to Mount Olive, N.C. for a weekend series with No. 23 University of Mount Olive. The Royals and Trojans will play a doubleheader on Friday afternoon followed by a single game on Saturday at Scarborough Field.
