HARTSVILLE, S.C. – A large second quarter run propelled the Queens University of Charlotte women's basketball team to a 77-63 South Atlantic Conference victory over the Cobras of Coker University on Wednesday night inside the DeLoach Center.
Queens (3-7, 2-2 SAC) shot 57.1 percent from the floor as a team, led by 19 points from junior
Kristian Eanes and 18 points from sophomore
Jaymi Golden who each played the full 40 minutes. The Royals' defense held Coker (3-5, 1-4 SAC) to just 28 percent shooting, including a 4-for-20 performance from 3-point range.
Coker led by eight points, 23-15 at the end of one quarter of play and opened the second frame with five unanswered points from Amanda Cherry to build a double-digit lead with 8:40 left to play in the half. However, four consecutive points from Eanes sparked a 19-3 run over the final seven and a half minutes of the first half as Queens led 34-31 at intermission.
The second half opened with an 8-2 run by the Cobras which allowed them to take a 39-36 lead before freshman
Kelsey Leedle tied the score at 39-39 with a 3-pointer, her third of the game.
Junior
Julia Raflund evened the score once again at 41-all as the Royals twice led by as many as seven points, 50-43 and 52-45, following layups from redshirt-freshman
Taylor Stevens in the final two minutes of the third. Queens built its lead to double digits, 59-49, on back-to-back free throws from Golden with 7:28 and pulled away for the road victory.
Raflund was the third Royals in double figures, finishing with 15 points on 6-of-8 shooting and five rebounds, while Stevens collected her first career double-double with 13 points and 11 rebounds in 28 minutes off of the bench.
The Royals return home to host Tusculum University on Saturday, December 21 at 2 p.m. in the team's final game before Winter Break.
