Queens Falls in Thrilling SAC Championship Finale

CHARLOTTE, N.C. – The Queens University of Charlotte women's volleyball team suffered a 3-0 (25-22, 25-21, 25-23) loss at the hands of fourth-seeded Carson-Newman University on Saturday afternoon in the finals of the 2019 South Atlantic Conference Women's Volleyball Championships from Curry Arena.

The match was tightly contested throughout, featuring 24 ties and 11 total lead changes as neither team was able to gain any sizeable advantage.

In the opening set, the lead changed hands seven total times before the Eagles closed the set with four unanswered points to take a 1-0 match lead. Momentum carried into the second frame as Carson-Newman built a 7-2 lead early on. Queens battled back to tie the score at 10-all and held an 18-15 lead before the Eagles rallied off eight unanswered points to go back in front by five.

With Carson-Newman looking to close out the match, Queens controlled much of the third set and led 21-16 following a kill from redshirt-sophomore Gabbi Montgomery. However, the Eagle put together a comeback once again, tying the score at 21-all before ending the match with four of the next six points to claim the title.

Junior Casey Tarvin led the Royals with 12 kills to go along with 20 digs, while fellow junior JayCee Jones had a team-high 21 digs on defense. Both Jones and Tarvin earned spots on the All-Tournament Team.

Juniors Chanel Turner and Logan Witt finished with eight and six kills, respectively, and senior setter Mallory Swarts had a double-double of 21 assists and 10 digs.

The Royals will now turn their focus to receiving an at-large bid to the NCAA Southeast Regionals next week. The selection show takes place on Monday, Nov. 25 at 7:30 p.m. on NCAA.com
