CARROLLTON, Ga. – Down 15 with 17:04 to play,
Jay'Den Turner's first career double-double helped the No. 6/6 Queens University of Charlotte men's basketball team (5-0) to a 92-85 comeback win over The University of West Georgia (1-4) on Wednesday night at The Coliseum. Turner finished with 18 points and 14 rebounds (seven offensive) to pace four Royals in double figures.
Queens fell behind 36-21, with 4:05 left in the first half, after an Oronte Anderson layup capped a 14-2 West Georgia run. The Wolves led, 44-32, at halftime and held the Royals to 28.1-percent shooting (9-32) and 23.5-percent 3-point shooting (4-17) in the first half.
In the second, the UWG lead hit 15 again after Seth Brown-Carter scored five-straight points putting the Wolves ahead, 55-40, with 17:03 left.
Queens immediately countered with a 9-0 run to pull back into the game. The run featured four rebounds and four points by Turner and was capped by a
Jermaine Patterson offensive rebound and lay-in to tighten the score, 55-49, with 14:21 remaining.
After the West Georgia lead again hit 12, 67-55, with 10:13 left, a three-point play by Patterson with 6:54 to play pulled Queens within one score, 71-68.
Moments later, the Royals tied the score, 71-71, with 6:17 remaining after a pair of made free throws by
Jamari Smith, and took their first second-half lead, 75-73, with 5:30 to play after another layup by Patterson.
In the final moments, Queens stretched the lead to as many as 10 points, 90-80, on a Turner free throw with 33 seconds left.
In the second half, the Royals shot 48.6 percent from the floor (17-35) and 44.4 percent from the 3-point line (4-9). Queens outrebounded UWG, 29-15, in the second half, to flip a -10 first-half rebounding deficit into a +4 final margin.
Smith tied Turner with a team-high 18 points and six rebounds.
Jermaine Patterson scored 17 points and
Daniel Carr scored 13 with eight rebounds.
Anderson led West Georgia with a game-high 25 points. Brown-Carter scored 18, Kovi Tate added 16 and 12 rebounds, and Michael Zabatakis scored 10 with eight boards.
