CHARLOTTE, N.C.- The Queens University of Charlotte Royals (12-6) secured its first-ever South Atlantic Conference Carolinas Regular Season Field Hockey Championship this afternoon with a 7-1 win over the University of Mount Olive (1-13) that helped the Royals close the regular season at 10-2 in league play.
The Royals dominated the Trojans offensively today outshooting Mount Olive 31-3 to put 20 shots on goal. Senior forward
Mazvita Mtisi led the Royals offense with six points on two goals and two assists. Freshman midfielder
Gabe Lechner also finished with a pair goals. Sophomore goalkeeper
Avian Thompson collected her 11
th win of the season after totaling two saves.
The first goal of the day would come from Mtisi in just the second minute of play. She then followed with another in the eighth to give the Royals a 2-0 lead heading into the second quarter.
In the second, Mtisi connected with fellow senior
Hanna Nechay to record an assist on the third goal of the day. A goal from the Trojans in the 25
th broke up the Royals' scoring run, but Queens' Lechner answered with another for the home team soon after to give Queens a 4-1 lead at the halftime break.
In the second half, the Royals extended their lead to six scoring three additional goals in remaining minutes of regulation.
Molly Walter scored an unassisted goal in the 37
th and senior forward
Jenna Lloyd followed with another in the 38
th after receiving a pass from Mtisi. Walter and Lechner then teamed up to score the final goal of the day in the 49
th.
Prior to the start of the game, seniors Mtisi, Nechay, Lloyd,
Lauren Wolfgang, Sta'Sha Waterfield,
Maha Clarke,
Carey Karl, and
Paige Ramsey were recognized for all of their contributions to the program over the past four years.
Winning the regular season title earns Queens hosting rights of this season's
conference championship tournament which is scheduled to take place next weekend. The semifinals will take place on Friday, November 8 beginning at 4 p.m. and the championship game is scheduled for Sunday, November 10 at 2 p.m.
The Royals have the first game on Friday against Belmont Abbey, the No. 4 seed. Second-seeded Newberry will take on third-seeded Limestone at 6:30 p.m.
