Royals Clinch Share of Conference Regular Season Championship with win over Crusaders

Box Score

CHARLOTTE, N.C.- The Queens University of Charlotte field hockey team clinched a share of its first South Atlantic Conference Carolinas Regular Season Championship this afternoon defeating Belmont Abbey, 1-0, at Bessant Field. Today's win over the Crusaders moves the Royals to 9-1 in league play and 11-5 on the year. It also avenges the only conference loss Queens has this season.

After coming up unlucky on a few scoring opportunities this afternoon, Queens was able to really capitalize when they were awarded a penalty stroke in the 59th minute of action due to a Belmont Abbey defender committing a deliberate foul which prevented a goal from being scored. Junior midfielder Maya Forbes stepped up to score the goal and give the Royals a 1-0 lead which they held on to until the end of regulation.

Queens outshot Belmont Abbey 10-3, putting two shots on goal. The Royal also earned five penalty corners to the Crusaders' three.

Goalkeeper Avian Thompson recorded two saves to notch her fifth shutout of the season.

Queens is back in action on the road at Newberry on Wednesday, October 30 at 6 p.m.
