CHARLOTTE, N.C. – The Queens University of Charlotte men's rugby team fell to No. 21 Clemson University in its home opener Saturday evening, 19-12, at Dickson Field at the Queens Sports Complex.
The Royals saw tries scored by both
John Monroe and
Lebo Ngwenya. Additionally,
Stanton Johnson recorded one successful conversion in the match. On the opposite end, Drew Dommel scored all of Clemson's 19 points.
Queens was the first to put points on the board on a try from Monroe. Johnson then followed the try with a successful conversion kick to make the score 7-0 early. However, the Tigers answered back with a penalty kick from Dommel, who also scored a try, a conversion, and another penalty kick to make the score 13-7 heading into the halftime break.
In the second half, Dommel kicked two successful penalty kicks to make the score 19-7, but Ngwenya answered with a try with 10 minutes left in the half to close the gap to seven, 19-12. Unfortunately, that was close as the Royals would to Clemson before time expired in the match.
The Royals travel next week to Raleigh, North Carolina to battle North Carolina State University on Saturday, September 29. Play is slated to begin at 1 p.m.
