CHARLOTTE – The Queens University of Charlotte women's soccer team (3-3) welcomed the undefeated Catawba Indians (6-0) to Dickson Field for a conference clash on Wednesday, and despite outshooting the Indians 15-7, the Royals dropped a close match between two evenly matched teams by a score of 1-0.
On a scorching hot day in Charlotte that led to an influx of substitutions and multiple water breaks, Catawba's Maddie Peck was able to find the back of the net at 15:04 in the first half for the game's only goal. She was assisted by Mackenzie Rennie.
Queens, who put more shots on goal (8) than Catawba's total number of shots (7), had a barrage of opportunities early in the first half and throughout the second half. The Royals put four shots on goal in the first half, and another four on goal in the second half, including two headers from sophomore
Lulu Phan that nearly tied the game at one apiece.
Senior
Rachel Quest made three big saves for the Royals, including one with just over two minutes remaining in the first half to keep the deficit at only one goal.
Freshman
Dani Diaz led Queens in both shots (5) and shots on goal (3). Phan tallied four shots and two on goal, while senior captain
Charlotte Ring recorded three shots, while also putting two on goal.
Victoria Templin and
Emma Rose Stockton also provided scoring opportunities for the Royals.
Queens will look to bounce back on Sunday, Sept. 23 when it travels to the University of Charleston in Charleston, W.V., for its fourth road game in its past five games overall. That game is scheduled to kickoff at 1:00 p.m.
