Morrow, Ga. – The Queens University of Charlotte men's soccer team wasted no time earning its first dramatic win of the season. Opening their season on the road against Clayton State University, the Royals pitched a shutout which allowed
Edmundo Robinson to be the hero as he found the back of the net for the game's only goal in a double-overtime thriller at Laker Field.
Robinson, a Georgia native and the Royals' standout senior forward, ended things in the 102nd minute of play when he shot from the far-right corner of the 18, burying it in the back-left corner and beating Lakers' goalkeeper Kari Puustinen for the game-winner.
Despite Queens amassing 27 total shots, including 16 on goal, the score remained tied at 0-0 throughout the first 90 minutes of regulation and over the barrage of shots during the 10 minutes of the first overtime. Finally, Robinson broke through on his 12th shot of the night and propelled his team to a big first win to begin the season.
Robinson threatened time and time again throughout the game for the Royals, and his 12 shots were a team-high, eight of which landed on goal. Queens erupted for six shots in 10 minutes during the first overtime, four of which came off the foot of Robinson. Of those four shots, three required a save. A reigning South Atlantic Conference First-Team All-Conference selection, Robinson picked up his 17th-career goal to begin his fourth year in a Royals uniform.
Making his first start in goal for Queens, junior keeper
Sebastian Kalk earned a double-overtime shutout in his first appearance since transferring from Cleveland State University. Kalk, who led the Horizon League and ranked fifth in the nation in save percentage as a freshman, thwarted the only two shots he saw on goal. The stout defense of the Royals played a major role, allowing only seven total shots, 20 less than Queens manufactured.
For Clayton State, junior defenseman Jordan Knight received his second yellow card, and in turn a red card, in the game's 63rd minute. That left the Lakers shorthanded for the final 39 minutes of play. Knight had previously played every minute of every game for the past two seasons.
For Queens, senior forward
Alberto Morales recorded five shots on the night, including four on goal.
Sitting at 1-0, the Royals face a daunting task next up as No. 14 Limestone College will play host to Sunday night's Sept. 2 game in Gaffney, S.C. That matchup is slated to begin at 7:00 p.m.
