HIGHLIGHTS
CHARLOTTE, N.C. – The Queens University of Charlotte men's volleyball team celebrated its first 'Senior Night' with a 3-0 (25-22, 25-18, 25-17) win over the Flying Fleet of Erskine College inside Curry Arena. The victory also extended Queens' longest winning streak of the season to three matches in a row.
Queens honored graduate student
Jake Dube and team manager
Brianna Henry in a pre-match ceremony as both were contributing members to the team's growth and success in its inaugural season.
The Royals (8-18) had their second-best hitting night of the season on Friday, registering a .338 mark thanks in large part to just seven attack errors. On defense, Queens held Erskine (7-18) to just .052 percent on offense.
Erskine jumped out to an early 4-2 lead in the opening set of play before five unanswered points from the Royals forced the Fleet to call a timeout.
Out of the break, Erskine tied the set at 7-all, but a kill from freshman
Nic Cavallaro and back-to-back attack errors from EC put Queens back in front for the remainder of the set. Cavallaro had six kills on just 10 swings without an error in the frame.
Queens led from start to finish in set two, building a lead as large at 10 points at 22-12 on an Erskine service error. Another Fleet service error ended the set with the Royals in front to extend their lead to 2-0 in the match.
Kills from
Gregory Esquivel and
Aleksandar Perisic, coupled with an Erskine attack error gave Queens an 8-5 lead in the third frame as the Royals never trailed again after the set saw five total ties on the scoreboard early on.
Cavallaro led all players with 13 kills and a .500 hitting percentage to go along with six digs. Esquivel followed with seven kills (.316) and eight digs, while Perisic registered five kills and three total blocks. Freshman
Conner Nagaki led the back row with nine digs of his own.
The regular season comes to a close on Tuesday, April 10, when Queens hosts University of Charleston (W. Va.) inside the Levine Center at 6 p.m. before the Royals take part in the IVA Championships next weekend.
