Queens Advances to SAC Semifinals

Postgame Interview with Chris Kivlen

CHARLOTTE, N.C.  –
The Queens University of Charlotte men's lacrosse team scored the most goals in a single game this season to defeat Catawba College this evening by a score of 21-12 in the quarterfinal round of the South Atlantic Conference Championships. The Royals move on to the semifinals with a record of 9-6 while the Indians' season comes to a close with a 6-9 record.

Kevin Barry led Queens with five points on four goals and one assist while Laszlo Henning added three goals. Justin Metzger totaled three points on two goals and one assist, and Reed Murphy recorded one goal and two assists for three points as well. Eric Fitz and Tariek Haris chipped in with two goals apiece. Anthony Valenza took the win in goal after totaling 10 saves in 49:13 while Kyle Hornik tallied two saves in 10:47.

Queens' Metzger opened today's scoring after Zac Bruso intercepted a pass at midfield and found Metzger in front of the net for a goal just 30 seconds into play. The Indians answered with a goal at 9:03 to knot the game at 1-1, but three straight unassisted goals followed for the Royals to give the home team a 4-1 lead with 1:41 on the clock. Following Barry's second goal of the day at 1:41, lightning in the area forced a delay that lasted one hour and 38 minutes.

Out of the torrential downpour, neither team would score again until the second quarter. Barry would find the back of the net first with a goal at 13:57 for Queens beginning a 5-1 run that put the Royals on top, 9-2. Catawba then scored three goals to Queens' two in the final five minutes of the period to cut the margin to six, 11-5, at the halftime break.

In the third, the Royals put three additional points on the board before lightening in the area caused another delay in play with 8:59 on the clock. Following the interruption, Queens was outscored 2-1 by the Indians giving the game a 15-7 score heading into the final 15 minutes of action.

The Royals opened the fourth with a pair of goals from Harris that increased the home team's lead to 10, 17-7. However, Catawba answered with three straight goals that pulled them back within seven. Queens then secured its victory scoring four consecutive goals to move in front by 11, 21-10, before the Indians tallied the final two of the game in the closing minutes of action.

Queens outshot Catawba, 61-38, putting 38 shots on goal to the Indians' 24 shots on goal. The Royals also totaled 42 ground balls to Catawba's 23 and won the faceoff battle, 22-37. Drew Flack won 14-of-24 faceoffs while Matt Jun won 8-of-13.

Cole Fanzo, Liam Lynch, Joe Barber, and Justin Warnock each recorded two goals for Catawba. Hunter Cheuvront recorded the loss after totaling six saves in 26:40. Kevin Geiger played 33:20 in goal recording 11 saves.

The Royals move on to the semifinals to face top-seeded Lenoir-Rhyne University on Friday, April 27 at 11 a.m. The semifinals and finals of the championships will take place on the campus of Wingate University in Wingate, N.C.
