GREENEVILLE, Tenn. – The bats came to life, the pitching remained strong and the Queens University of Charlotte softball team completed its regular season with a doubleheader sweep over Tusculum College today from Red Edmonds Field.
Queens (34-14, 10-10) came from behind and scored four over the final three innings to take Game One, 4-1. The momentum continued into Game Two as the Royals tagged the Pioneers (22-25, 6-14) for nine runs en route to a 9-5 victory.
By adding two to the wins column, the Royals' 34 victories in 2018 matches the highest program win total from 2006.
Leading the offensive charge for Queens was
Alyssa Strickler. Coming into the final two games without a home run, Strickler blasted her first two of the season against Tusculum, one in each game. She finished the day with four hits (three for extra bases), five RBI, and two runs scored.
Strickler's first long ball tied the game at 1-1 in the fifth inning, sparking the Queens offense that had yet to record a hit.
Sara Ingoldsby and
Evie Scott then doubled in back-to-back at-bats to give Queens a one-run lead, providing the necessary cushion for pitcher
Courtney Pearson (15-8).
Pearson finished up another dominant performance as she went the distance, giving up just one run (one earned) and six hits to go with three strikeouts and one walk. She was also credited with the save in Game Two as she completed the final three innings in the circle, allowing no runs on four hits, striking out four.
Evie Scott (1-1) picked up the win in only her second appearance of the season.
The Royals totaled 17 hits, 12 coming in Game Two, including three RBI singles from
Abby Lathan,
Jordan Hunt, and Strickler that headlined a five-run third inning. They went on to score at least one run in four of the last five innings.
Seven different batters recorded a hit in the second game, with four of those players notching two or more. Ingoldsby led the way with three hits, while Hunt,
Grace Wesoly, and Strickler each had two apiece.
Brooke Sanford, who added a couple important insurance runs with a two-run triple in the final inning of Game One, picked up her first two RBI of the season.
With the regular season now complete, the Royals will turn their focus to the South Atlantic Conference Championships in Anderson, S.C., set to take place April 27-28.
