CHARLOTTE, N.C, -- In a doubleheader matchup of two of the top four teams in the South Atlantic Conference, the No. 23 Queens University of Charlotte softball team picked up one victory today over Anderson University as the Royals celebrated Senior Day at Park Road Park.
Powered by a towering grand slam from
Evie Scott, and a pitching gem from
Courtney Pearson, Queens (32-12, 8-8) defeated Anderson in Game One by a score of 5-2, before dropping Game Two, 10-2.
Scott stepped to the plate as a pinch hitter with the bases loaded in the third inning and smacked a home run over the fence in left field. The grand slam gave Queens an early 4-0 lead and marked the first home run of the senior's career.
The four-run lead off the bat of Scott was more than enough for Pearson, who after escaping a first-inning jam, shut down the Trojans in all but one inning in which she gave up a two-run double down the left field line.
Pearson, now 14-7 on the season, went the distance and struck out nine. She allowed two runs, both earned, on six hits. She has now pitched 15 complete games in her 21 starts.
The Royals, facing off against the reigning SAC AstroTurf Pitcher of the Week Harlie Duncan (13-3), trailed by only one run through three innings of Game Two, 2-1. Anderson's bats then came alive and scored eight runs over the course of the final three innings.
Shannon McGuire (13-3) took the loss.
Leadoff hitter
Sara Ingoldsby piled up another three hits on the day and now has 60 on the season, tying her for fourth in Queens history.
Gemma Miller, who got the start in the two-hole in the order, racked up two hits of her own.
The Game One win for Queens marked the 300th career win for head coach
Stacey Schramm, who is in her 13
thseason as a head coach.
Prior to the start of this afternoon's games, seniors
Abby Lathan,
Elaina Frantellizzi, Miller, and Scott were honored for their collegiate careers.
Queens will close out its home schedule on Wednesday, April 14 as they welcome Wingate University to Park Road Park for a doubleheader set to begin at 1 p.m.
