Queens Comeback Falls Short in SAC Opener with LMU

WILLIAMSBURG, Ky.  – The Queens University of Charlotte men's lacrosse team traveled to face Lincoln Memorial University at a neutral site this afternoon. Though outscoring the Railsplitters 8-3 in the fourth quarter, the Royals would fall 14-13 to move to 2-4 on the year and 0-1 in South Atlantic Conference play. Lincoln Memorial improves to 8-1 on the season and 2-0 in the league.
 
Quinn Tallant and Reed Murphy recorded the first hat tricks of their careers to lead the Royals along with Eric Fitz who also tallied three goals. Justin Swick totaled two goals and two assists while Jesse Oliver and Tyler Redpath added a goal apiece. Drew Flack led at the faceoff winning 24-of-31 and totaling 14 ground balls. Anthony Valenza and Kyle Hornik each spent time in goal to combine for nine saves.
 
Queens was edged in shots, 43-41, putting 30 shots on goal to Lincoln Memorial's 23 shots on frame. The Royals also won the battle for ground balls, 38-22, and won 24-of-31 faceoffs.
 
The Railsplitters got off to a hot start this afternoon opening the game with five unanswered goals to lead 5-0 with 5:27 to play in the first. Queens' first goal of the day would come from Tallant at 4:32, but one more goal from the Railsplitters followed giving them a 6-1 lead heading into the second.
 
Lincoln Memorial put three more points on the board in the second before the Royals' Tallant scored a man-up goal with 6:10 on the clock. Queens then outscored the Railsplitters 2-1 in the final minutes of the period to head into the break trailing 10-4.
 
Following a quiet third quarter that saw one goal scored by each team, the Royals came alive in the fourth as Murphy put two quick goals on the board to close the margin to four, 11-7, with 14:10 to play. Lincoln Memorial's Robert Tucker responded with a goal at 8:26 to extend the Railsplitters' lead back out to five, 12-7, but Fitz had an answer scoring three consecutive goals to bring the Royals within two, 12-10, with 6:26 left in regulation.
 
The Railsplitters' Chris Tucker paused Queens' run with a goal at 5:57, and the Royals responded putting two more balls in the cage to make it a one-point game, 13-12, at 4:51. Murphy then found the back of the net to score the Royals' final goal of the day with three minutes left to play, however, his goal followed another from Chris Tucker at 3:35 that had made it a two-possession game.
 
Chris Tucker led the Railsplitters with four goals while Kyle Arcuri, Billy Kopsky, and Chad Walters each tallied two goals. Arcuri also totaled four assists while Adam Golia recorded three assists. Michael Kessler took the win in goal after recording 17 saves.
 
The Royals will remain on the road for their next conference game on Wednesday, Mar. 21. Queens will travel to face No. 4 Lenoir-Rhyne University who they fell, 17-8, to during the regular season last year. Queens later had the final say defeating the Bears 10-9 in overtime in the SAC Championship Semifinals. The first faceoff is scheduled for 7 p.m., in Hickory, N.C.
