HARROGATE, Tenn.  – Seventh-ranked Queens University of Charlotte advances to the NCAA DII Men's Basketball Elite Eight for the first time since 2003 after defeating top-ranked Lincoln Memorial University in the fourth meeting of the season between the pair. Queens improves to 31-3 on the year after winning 69-57, while Lincoln Memorial's season comes to a close at 32-2. Â
Â
Ike Agusi led the Royals with 16 points, four rebounds, and three assists.
Jalin Alexander added 13 points and four rebounds while
Lewis Diankulu totaled 12 points and seven rebounds.
Mike Davis chipped in with 10 points and
Shaun Willett added nine points.
Todd Withers totaled five points, four rebounds, and four blocks. He was named to the all-tournament team while Alexander was honored as the Southeast Region Tournament MVP.
Â
The Royals shot 44.2-percent from the floor, connecting on 34.8-percent of their shots from deep tonight while the Railsplitters were held to just 38.6-percent shooting. Despite averaging nearly 100 points per game this year against other opponents, Lincoln Memorial becomes the sixth team this season to score fewer than 60 points against Queens. Additionally, the Royals were able to out-rebound the Railsplitters, 36-32.
Â
Holding just a one-point, 50-49, lead with 10:39 to play, Queens used a 13-2 run to take control of tonight's game for good. Three-points the old-fashioned way from Davis at 8:59 would spark the run that lasted until the Railsplitters' Emanuel Terry scored a tip-in at 3:23. The 12-point lead prior to Terry's basket was the largest of the night for Queens.
Â
Following the bucket from Terry, the Railsplitters tried to make a comeback closing the margin to six, 63-57, with 1:35 left in regulation. However, they then sent Agusi of Queens, an 87-percent free-throw shooter, to the foul line three different times where he connected on all six from the charity stripe to help secure the Royals' victory.
Â
Queens trailed for just 5:14 early in the first half of this evening's game before a triple from Withers at 12:11 put the Royals in front for good. They then increased their lead to 10 on two different occasions before an 8-3 run by the Railsplitters cut the margin to five, 38-33, just before the break.
Â
Dorian Pinson led the Railsplitters with 16 points while Terry totaled 13 points. Josh Odem added 11 points and Trevon Shaw, who averaged 17 points this year, was held to just five points.
Â
Prior to tonight, the Royals had lost three times to the Railsplitters this season. Queens also avenged two straight post-season losses at the hands of Lincoln Memorial with the win, and the NCAA DII Southeast Regional Championship victory for Queens snaps a 25-game winning streak at home for Lincoln Memorial.
Â
Up next for the Royals is the Elite Eight in Sioux Falls, S.D. This will be the third trip in program history to the Elite Eight for Queens, and all have been under the leadership of head coach
Bart Lundy. The Royals advanced all the way to the semifinals during the 2002-03 season.
Â
The national quarterfinals will take place on March 20 and the semifinals will follow on March 22. The national championship game will take place on Saturday, March 24. The eight advancing teams will be re-seeded, and matchups will be announced later tonight.
