Pearson Records Career-High 16 Strikeouts in Royals' Home-Opening Sweep

CHARLOTTE, N.C. -  The Queens University of Charlotte softball team (2-0) faced Emmanuel College (Ga.) (0-2) in its season opener this afternoon coming away with a sweep after defeating the Lions 7-5 and 13-5 in the double-header.
 
Game 1:
 
In the first game of the day, Kelly Winter started a hitting rally with a single down the left field line in the bottom of the third. Sydney Ditto followed by reaching first on an error by Emmanuel's short stop, and Winter advanced to second on the play. Elaina Frantellizzi then doubled to center field, pushing Ditto to third and scoring Winter to put the Royals up 1-0. 
 
To start the bottom of the fifth Winter was walked and then advanced to second on a SAC bunt from Ditto. Following, Frantellizzi flew out to left field just before Strickler was walked. Jordan Hunt then singled and advanced to second on an error by the Lions' left fielder, scoring both Winter and Strickler to increase the Royals lead to 3-0 before the inning ended.
 
Breanna Martinez gave the Royals their lone run of the sixth inning with a home run to left center field.
 
Emmanuel remained scoreless until the seventh inning when Isabelle Pet singled to score Cassie Mayfi for the Lions beginning a rally for the visiting Lions. Noelle Petty also singled to score Kristin Durd. Mary Baxter followed with a double to left field that scored Petty, Pet, and Meredith Ree putting the Lions up 5-3.
 
Hunt would answer for the Royals in the bottom of the seventh hitting a three-run homer that scored Frantellizzi, Strickler and herself, and ended the game with a 7-5 score. 
 
Royals pitcher Courtney Pearson recorded a career-high 16 strikeouts, and captured her first win of the season. Hunt recorded her first career homerun, five RBI's, two hits and one run. B. Martinez also recorded her first ever career homerun.
 
Game 2:
 
Emmanuel's Petty would score the first run of game two after hitting a single to center field before stealing second and reaching home on a triple from Baxter. Morgan Frank then singled to left field scoring Baxter to put the Lions up, 2-0.
 
Queens' Sara Ingoldsby opened the bottom of the first with a walk and would advance to third base thanks to a pair of errors from Emmanuel. Ditto then tripled to right field, scoring Ingoldsby. Next, Frantellizzi singled to center field to score Ditto and then advanced to second off a single by Strickler. Abby Lathan then stepped up to the plate to hit a triple to right field to score both Frantellizzi and Strickler giving the Royals a 4-2 lead at the end of the first.
 
In the bottom of the second, a double by Baxter brought two runners home to tie the game at 4-4. The game remained knotted until the bottom of the third when Lathan batted Hunt home on a single to left field. 
 
Pinch hitter, Allison Lopez, started a hot fifth inning for the Royals with a triple to left field that scored both Lathan and Strickler. Cierra Robinson followed with another triple that scored Grace Wesoly, who had entered the game as a pinch runner for Lopez. A double by Winter then helped Breanna Martinez score, forcing the Lions to make a pitching change. With their foot still on the gas, Queens' Ditto doubled to left field to score Winter. Frantellizzi then capped the inning with a single to center that scored Ditto. The Royals headed into the sixth ahead, 11-5.
 
Pearson came in to close the game for the Royals and pitched to three batters for three straight outs. An error by the Lions then allowed Queens' Robinson to reach first base and Lathan to score for the Royals. Ingoldsby then batted Robinson home to finish the game with the Royals on top, 13-5.
 
Lathan finished with three RBIs, two hits, and two runs while Ingoldsby finished with three hits, one run, and one RBI.
 
The Royals return home next Saturday, Feb. 10 when they will host Johnson C. Smith University and West Liberty University in the Queens Invite.
