Royals Sweep Braves to Advance to 4-0

PEMBROKE, N.C. -  The Queens University of Charlotte softball team (4-0) swept the University of North Carolina- Pembroke (2-4) taking the first game 5-3 before run-ruling the Braves 9-0 in the second game.

In game one, Pembroke scored three runs in the first inning before Queens scored a run in the second, third, and fifth innings to tie the game up at 3-3. The Royals second inning run came with two outs, Elaina Frantellizzi on second, and Abby Lathan up to bat. The senior short stop would hit a single to right center field to send Frantellizzi home. Sydney Ditto then tallied two RBIs off two singles to center field to score Breanna Martinez and Kelly Winter in the third and fifth innings, respectively.

With two outs on the board in the seventh inning the Braves walked Ditto, who then stole second base. Frantellizzi then brought her home on a double to left center. Alyssa Strickler stepped up to the plate next to hit another double for the Royals and record a RBI as Frantellizzi reached home plate putting the Royals ahead for the remainder of the game.

Ditto went two-for-three at the plate with one run scored, two RBIs, and one stolen base. Sophomore Courtney Pearson (2-0) pitched to 22 batters allowing only six hits while also accumulated two strike outs. Freshman Shannon McGuire earned the save by coming in to close in the seventh inning and striking out two-of-three batters.

Queens' Jordan Hunt got the Royals going in game two with a home run to start the second inning. After being hit by a pitch, Lathan took first and was then driven home by B. Martinez who hit a triple to left center. Sara Ingoldsby then picked up an RBI by scoring Martinez as she grounded out to second. With two outs on the board, Kelly Winter would cap the scoring for the inning with a home run to left field putting the Royals up 4-0 over the Braves.

Hunt continued her great play getting on base in the third inning with a double to left field. The Royals then added to their lead when Lathan came up to bat and homered to left field putting Queens in front, 6-0.

In the fourth, Evie Scott entered play as a pinch hitter recording a single up the middle. After getting on base, B. Martinez re-entered play for Scott, and used her speed to steal second, and third base. Winter would bring her home on a line out to center field.

In the final inning of play Queens picked up two more runs to end the second game with the Braves in the fifth. Sabrina Martinez checked in to pinch run for Alyssa Strickler who was walked during her at bat. S. Martinez stole second and then advanced to third during Hunt's at bat. Up next was Lathan who was also walked and stole second base. Cierra Robinson then stepped up to the plate to finish things out for Queens by singling through the right side to record the final two RBIs of the day.
