Royals Split Matchup with Belmont Abbey

BELMONT, N.C. – The Queens University of Charlotte softball team (7-2) split its doubleheader with Belmont Abbey College (4-4) this afternoon taking game one, 5-4, before falling, 4-3, in game two.

The Royals start of 7-2 marks their best record through the first nine games in over five seasons and they have outscored their opponents 68-32.

Queens opened scoring in the top of the first. Kelly Winter and Sydney Ditto opened the frame with a walk and a reach on a fielding error, respectively. With Winter on third and Ditto on second, Allison Lopez came up to the plate to hit a SAC fly to center field and tally the RBI as Winter scored. However, Belmont Abbey answered back in the bottom half, with a walk and back to back doubles off freshman Shannon McGuire, to take the lead 2-1.

The second inning remained scoreless, as Alyssa Strickler and Grace Wesoly both flew out, while Brooke Sanford followed with a single, only to get thrown out at second attempting to swipe the bag. Courtney Pearson entered the game on the mound, allowing a lead-off single, and then shut down the next three hitters to lead the Royals into the top of the third.

With two outs, Ditto and Lopez hit back to back home runs to put the Royals up 3-2.

The Royals added another run in the fourth, when Abby Lathan led off with a walk, and reached third on a fielding error by the third baseman.  In a first and third play, Sanford stole second base to allow Abby Lathan to score on the play.

Queens' final run of the game came in the top of the seventh, on a leadoff single and two walks that forced the bases loaded for Lopez, who hit a ground ball into the 5-6 hole to score Sara Ingoldsby.  Belmont Abbey pushed one run across in the bottom of the seventh, but Courtney Pearson was able to induce a line drive to shortstop to seal the game, 5-4.

Pearson pitched six innings to earn the win for the Royals and struck out five batters, while giving up two runs. Sanford went two-for-two with one stolen base. Ditto and Lopez both went 1-for-3, each with a homerun and combined for four RBI's.

In game two of the series the Royals once again drew first blood. Ingoldsby singled up the middle and advanced on Elaina Frantellizzi's single to right field. With two outs, Jordan Hunt singled to plate Ingoldsby and put the Royals up 1-0.

In the top of the second, with Winter and Wesoly on first and second, Sanford SAC bunted advancing both runners. One batter later, Ingoldsby singled up the middle, scoring Winter, while Wesoly was thrown out at the plate.

In the bottom of the frame, Belmont Abbey tied the game up.  A lead-off walk, and a single to right field put runners at first and third and set the stage for a suicide squeeze.  A sacrifice fly to left field plated the second run, giving the Crusaders a 2-1 edge over the Royals.

The Royals remained scoreless in the third, while the Crusaders added insurance runs on a two-run home run just over the centerfield fence in the bottom of the third to take the lead 4-2 up until the seventh inning.

In the top of the seventh, the Royals were down by two runs, with two outs and Gerlea Patton standing on first base, Ditto worked a full count and smashed her second homerun of the game in what was thought to tie it up, 4-4.  However, a base running mishap proved costly for the Royals.  Patton was called out for missing third base on her way to home plate, while Ditto's run counted unearned, giving the Royals their second loss of the season.

Sara Ingoldsby led the Royals going two-for-four with one run and one RBI while Ditto went one-for-two with one run, one RBI and one home run.

The Royals travel to Florence, S.C., this weekend to compete in the Patriot Invitational hosted by Francis Marion University. Queens' first game will be on Friday, Feb. 16 at 3 p.m. versus Chowan University.
