CHARLOTTE, N.C. – The Queens University of Charlotte women's basketball team overcame a slow start to earn a 77-56 win over non-conference opponent Livingstone College on Sunday afternoon inside Curry Arena. The Royals improved to 5-6 overall with the victory, surpassing last season's win total.
Livingstone (3-8), members of the Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association, opened the game on a 12-5 run behind nine points from senior Kayla Searcy. The forward finished the game with a game-high 21 points to go along with 10 rebounds in 40 minutes of action.
The Royals went on to tie the score at 14-14 on back-to-back free throws from sophomore
Kristian Eanes and took the lead on a jumper from fellow sophomore
Lauren Fields. Consecutive layups by senior
Lade Adepoju put Queens ahead 20-14 to end the quarter.
After Queens carried a seven-point lead into the halftime break, the Blue Bears cut the deficit to just one possession with a 7-2 run, including six points from Searcy. The Royals quickly stretch the lead to double digits with eight unanswered points and held a 52-42 advantage with one quarter remaining.
Queens pushed its lead to a 20-point advantage with 2:44 remaining in the fourth with a layup from Eanes and held on for the team's largest margin of victory since collecting a 27-point win on December 7, 2017 against North Greenville University.
As a team, the Royals shot 46.3 percent from the field and held a 42-36 advantage in total rebounds, including 15 on the offensive end of the floor. Queens forced Livingstone into 27 total turnovers and converted those miscues into 31 total points.
Freshman
Jaleah Goff turned in a career-high 20 points on 7-of-11 shooting in her first career start, while Eanes followed with 15 points and six rebounds off of the bench.
Adepoju tallied her fourth double-double of the season with 10 points and a game-high 12 rebounds. Sophomore
Herning Wang also finished with 10 points on 4-of-5 shooting from the floor, while freshman
Jaymi Golden chipped in 10 points of her own and a career-high six assists.
The Royals return to action next Wednesday, January 9, when they take on South Atlantic Conference opponent Newberry College in Newberry, S.C. at 6 p.m.
